In Rugby Union, What Is The Job Of The Fly-half?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The fly-half, also known as the stand-off, usually wears the Number 10 shirt. He or she is normally receives the ball first from the scrum-half after a scrum, ruck or a mall. The fly-half is principally responsible for launching an attack by running and passing the ball to their team-mates. It is often the case that the fly-half takes overall charge of the kicking game.

In most teams, the stand –off is considered the best and most able kicker of the oval ball. He or she usually takes penalty kicks, either by punting the ball down field into touch to gain territory or place kicking the ball from ground towards the posts in the hope of scoring a penalty goal, which is worth three points. They are also the first port of call to attempt to score a dropped-goal in open play. When a fly-half is standing deep from a ruck, mall, or scrum, it usually means that the team is preparing to pass him or her the ball for a drop-kick over the posts in an attempt to gain three points.
