Which British Town Is Twinned With Timbuktu?

Answer Question

None at the moment, but quite a few are jostling for the honour.

The real Timbuktu is in Mali, one of the poorest towns in the world in one of the poorest countries in the world.  Timbuktu is poised on the edge of the Sahara, a strategic position that made it a stop for all caravans crossing the vast desert expanse.  Trade, commerce, culture and education once flourished in what was once a prosperous melting pot of a city.   Even today, many residents of the town can claim a mix of Jewish, European, Islamic, Arablic, sub-Saharan or Christian blood in their family history.  Historically the population numbered over 100,000 of which 25,000 or so were scholars in about the year 1500.  Today, there are thought to be about 35,000 residents.

So far (nominations close 15 November) Enfield, Aberystwyth, Cardiff , York and Hay-on-Wye have been nominated to be Britain's twin with Timbuktu.

Timbuktu already has these twin towns, Tempe in Arizona, Saintes in France, Marrakech in Morocco, Chemnitz in Germany, and Kairouan in Tunisia.
