What Is A Liver Transplant?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Liver transplantation also known as the hepatic transplantation basically is the substitution of an unhealthy liver with a healthy liver. The most widely used method of transplantation is the orthotropic transplantation, in which the original liver removed and is replaced by a donor liver.

Liver transplantation these days is a widely acknowledged treatment alternative for end-stage liver disease and severe liver failure. The first ever human liver transplant was carried out in the year 1963 by a surgical team which was headed by Dr Thomas Starz of America.

In spite of the viable surgical methods, liver transplantation stayed experimental all through the 1970s. The start of cyclosporine by Sir Roy Calne saw better outcomes, and by the 1980s liver transplantation became a standard clinical treatment together for adult as well as paediatric patients with proper indications.
