How High Can A Shetland Pony Jump?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Most Shetland Pony owners will tell you that Shetland ponies which are very small (often about four feet tall) cannot jump very high.  However, within the Shetland isles, Shetland ponies run free, usually in small herds and are often considered a pest by farmers and crofters.  This is because although they are small and although they look cute: they can jump over gates and fences and all manner of barricades built to keep them out.
If they are kept as domesticated ponies, they do not have to hunt for food, so they tend to jump about 3-3.5 feet high.  But when they are in a  position where they are hungry and the grass on the other side of the fence looks quite tasty, even if it is up to about four feet or slightly higher then they can jump over it.  Strangely it is very rare to find a pny stuck on a fence: they seem to either just not make it or sail over it with ease, but do not get tangled !
