How Did Diderot's Encyclopedia Challenge The Church?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Im not entirely certain I can convey a concrete explanation however the purpose behind the work was to give the reader deeper insight on self betterment and better society and even all facets of knowledge. This challenges the church because the church would have the minds of its subjects confined and limited to the will of the clergy and they would not know anymore than what the clergy allowed them. The Diderot Encyclopedia allows the reader to surpass the restricted and very limited doctrine of the church and therefore drawing power away from the church.
