He was influential in the English Civil War. This war involved two sides, the parliamentarians, loyal to parliament and the government and the royalists, loyal to the king. Cromwell was the main visionary of the new model army. This changed the English army's structure, from one which was based on military leaders selected by the nobility of their birth, to one which selected them on ability and leadership. He was one of the first commanders in this, and led the parliamentarians to victory over the royalists.

He ruled England, Scotland and Wales for the short time England was known as a republican commonwealth, after the royalists were defeated and the king was executed. Basically hes important because he brought England from being totally ruled by the monarchy, to more of control by parliament, and he kind of created the modern British army, which evolved to then go and and conquer a quarter of the world.
