How Many Teams Qualified For The World Cup Finals In Germany In 2006?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Thirty two teams qualified to play in the world cup finals in Germany, 2006.

The thirty two teams were then split into eight groups of four, with each team playing every team in their group once.  With three points awarded for a win, one for a draw and nothing for a defeat, the top two teams from each group went on to play in the last sixteen, and into a sudden death knock out tournament.

From the last sixteen the teams went on to the last eight (quarter finals), last four (semi finals) and finally the last two in the final.

Each game in the knock out stage was played in a sudden death format with no replays.  Unlike previous world cup finals however, there was no golden or silver goal; if after extra time, scores were still level, the games were decided by a penalty shootout.
