As India follows a Parliamentary system of government, the Prime Minister is the head of the government and also the leader of his party. He is responsible for the allocation of works to various Ministries. After allocating the work, the PM can still retain some portfolios with him if he wants. He appoints the Deputy Chairman for the Planning Commission of India and the chairman has to report directly to the PM. It is the PM who attends delegations and high level meetings in International Organizations. He also has two funds which are the National Relief Fund and the National Defense Fund.

The Cabinet members are the Ministers of the various departments like Ministry of Finance, Railways, Internal Affairs, Law and Justice, External Affairs and many others.
