What Was Elvis Presley's First Film?

Answer Question

5 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Elvis Presley's first film was released in the early fifties. It was called "Love me Tender." Three months after the film was released it recouped its filming cost of $1 million in three days.   This was a beautiful romance and his song from that movie is still well known and loved today.

During that same time Presley appeared on the Milton Berle, Steve Allen, and Ed Sullivan television shows. He was known along with the Beatles as the greatest star ever on the Sullivan show.

Although teens everywhere went crazy over Elvis, in early 1957 he became the target of criticism by teachers, clergymen, and even other entertainers who thought his style was too suggestive. I can remember sitting at my grandpa's and seeing Elvis on TV . . .(black and white!) and listening to the adult comments about the way he wiggled his hips!

Elvis was nicknamed "Elvis the Pelvis!"  On the last of his three appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show he was shown only from the waist up.

The first film that the Rock and Roll legend Elvis Presley starred in was called Love Me Tender, he also sang a song of the same name.  Elvis Presley was already famous by the time that he starred in the film and although his acting style is rather wooden and a bit clichéd, his appeal is not really his acting ability.

Even back then, people understood the marketing value of taking a pretty well known face and finding as many ways as possible to make people pay good money to see it.  In Elvis's case, he starred in a number of films, thirty-one in total.  He also wrote movie soundtracks to some of the films and eleven of those soundtracks were in the top ten.  The soundtrack for GI Blues was in the charts for a staggering 111 weeks!  That's some level of popularity.

Unfortunately, Love Me Tender had no such popularity, although it is a sweet little film, released on the 15th November 1956.
