How Long Can I Use My Prescription Drug For?

Answer Question

It depends on what prescription you are taking.  If it is a pain medication, I would be highly cautious!  I started taking vicodin for pain over 4 years ago, then was switched to Norco, then to Oxycontin.  I became addicted and finally after all those years, went into an in-patient treatment program to get off the medications.  It's been a tough road, and I wish it would never have happened to me!  I still have pain, but am learning to handle it with out the medications.  I feel better about myself now, as do the people in my life that love and care about me.

When your physician wrote the prescription he should have put a number of refills available for that prescription, you should find that number on the bottle.  That that will stop the pharmacy from re-filling the prescription after a certain number of refills.  If you think you are still in need of that medication at that time, the pharmacy will either contact your doctor and ask him if a refill is possible or you will have to go back to the doctor and let him check you again.
