"Split Unit" is a term commonly used in the air conditioning industry.
Basically a split unit is one where they typically place the louder condensing components of the air conditioner outdoors and the evaporator coils which are much quieter, inside. This is of course different to a single unit which combines the two components and is usually completely outdoors and the air is transported indoors via a network of ducts.
