How Popular Are Foreign Languages In UK Secondary Schools?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The number of British students studying a foreign language during their secondary school education has steadily declined over the years. Unlike in many other parts of Europe, students in the UK are permitted to opt out of foreign language instruction after they are 14 years of age.

Currently only about 50% of GCSE students study foreign languages. This percentage represents a significant decline from 2001, when nearly 80% of students were enrolled in a foreign language course. French remains the most popular of all foreign languages, with just over 30% of all students studying this language. Nevertheless, the number of students studying French has declined sharply since 2001. French is followed in second place by German, which stands at approximately 12%. Less than 5% of UK students study Spanish, a figure that has remained relatively steady over the years. About 8% of students were registered in other foreign language courses.

The British government has announced that by 2010, it plans to make foreign language education compulsory for all students between the ages of 7 and 14.
