Radioactive atoms emit spontaneous bursts of energy because their nucleus are highly unstable. Nuclear reaction can also cause radioactive emissions. The large the nucleus of an atom, the more unstable it is. For example, Uranium is packed with protons and neutrons and is highly radioactive.
