Born on 30 June 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland, Michael Phelps has been a prodigal swimming talent who has set the pool ablaze on a number of occasions over the past years. Phelps has had a glittering career so far, and almost assumed legendary proportions at a young age. The 2004 Olympics was where he shone ever so brightly. He was the first American to win eight medals in the course of a single Olympic Games. In the 2004 Olympics, he won six gold medals and two bronze medals. Along with mark Spitz, he became only the second swimmer to win four individual events at a single Olympics when, in the 2004 Olympics, he won in the 100m, 200m fly, 200m, and 400m IM. The same year, he also achieved the distinction of being the first ever swimmer to qualify for six events. In the 2003 World Championships, he was the first person in the pool to set a landmark five world records during the course of a single competition. In the process he also bagged four gold medals and two silver medals.

He was also the youngest American male to compete in an Olympics since 1932, when he entered the pool in the 2000 Olympics at the age of 15. The list is seemingly endless – five medals at the 2005 World Championships, first ever swimmer to win in three different stroke categories in a single national meet in 2003. He also has the distinction of being the first American to win five titles in a single national meet in 2005. He currently holds the world record for the 200m fly, 200m IM, and 400m IM. He was also the youngest swimmer in America to break a world record, at the age of 15 at the 2001 Spring Nationals.
