Can You Solve Using The Square Root Property: (x + 7)^2 = 81?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

    The square root property says the value of the variable is not changed by taking the square root of both sides of the equation. Note that the square root is a double-valued function, meaning that either positive or negative numbers may be the square root of a positive real number.

    √((x+7)^2) = √81    (square root of both sides)
    x + 7 = ±9    (evaluate)
    x = -7 ± 9    (subtract 7 from both sides)
    x = -16  or  x = 2
