What Is A Methodist?

    This is a member of the Methodist Church.  It is part of the Protestant faith, but is separate from other churches.  It was founded by John and Charles Wesley, who published the rule book for the Methodist Society in 1743.  John was the most active in creating the Methodists, although his brother Charles wrote almost 4,500 hymns!
    Methodists believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, simplicity and spirituality.  Although originally intened as being a Church within the Anglican faith, four years after Wesley died, in 1795, the Methodists split from the Anglican movement.
    They are also very against certain activities which they felt were not only ungodly, but made the poor even poorer, namely alcohol and gambling.
    Fundamental to the Methodist movement is a desire for social improvement and justice, which is still prevalent today.
    The Methodist Society flourished in the 19th Century, due to harsh economic conditions.  It still exists today, but is less popular than in previous times.
