The easiest thing to do is to cut them out, and then after that comb out daily using a spray-on detangler mist (chemist should be able to find you something on their shelves).

You can try to avoid having to cut out the hair clumps by combing, but your cat will object a heck of a lot. probably easier to just have a cat that looks a bit funny (after being partially sheared) for a while.

If you can't even pin the cat down to cut the clumped hair out, then take her to a professional groomer who should be able to do it quickly with electric shears, and give you advice about preventing future clumps.

But some long hair cats still get matted hair no matter what you do.

You need a fine toothed metal cat comb which you can buy in the pet shop. Then you will have to soften the clumps first with some oil, olive oil or sunflower is fine, rub it into the clumps while you caress your cat so he does not get too distressed. You do not mention if he is a long haired Persian
cat or not, but I imagine he may be.
Then when you have softened up the clumps cut off the worst ones that cannot be untangled. and comb through with the comb you will have to tease them out, which your cat will definitely not like. I suggest you put on some gardening gloves because he will scratch you to get away you will need someone to help you hold him.
The best way to prevent this is to comb the cat regularly to prevent this and get him used to the comb.
      Good Luck.

I work at a vet clinic and often bathe pet's (cat's and dog's) that are matted and tangled. The way that I have always gotten rid of the knots is to rub in conditioner and let it sit for about 5 min or so, then take a fine toothed metal flea comb and start at the ends and comb in little strokes until you work the knot out! It can be very time consuming and your pet may need a break every now and then if it becomes too aggitated. It also works great when you have a child that has gum stuck in their hair!
