In "The Nightingale", the Emperor of China hears that the nightingale is the loveliest thing in his kingdom. Only poor people know where to find it; with their help the nightingale is brought to court, and sings for the Emperor whenever he likes. Everyone admires its voice, and the Emperor himself becomes completely dependent on it until, one day, he is given a mechanical nightingale from Japan. Everyone declares the artificial bird to be superior, and the real one flies away. Much later, the mechanical bird breaks down , and no efforts can make it as good as new. The Emperor pines away and is close to death; everything has been tried to revive him, and the court is preparing to go into mourning when the real nightingale comes back and sings to the dying man. He immediately recovers, and it is agreed that the nightingale will come back and sing to hi from time to time.
