It's a buzzword / phrase / goal in the personal fitness / exercise / health world.

It's also the name of a specific businesses (in the UK ) and in the USA.

More generally, functional fitness is the concept that whatever fitness you have achieved in the gym / exercise / training regime, you want to be able to carry that over into ordinary daily life.  Not just can you carry a 25 kg bag of potatoes like you could benchpress it in the gym, but can you carry that sack of potatoes without injuring your back or muscles.

So it's as much about knowing how to use your body as about building strength in your body.

      Also sometimes called "functional training".

Suppose a woman needs to build up strength to avoid injuring her back when helping a disabled relative in and out of bed.  The point of functional fitness would be to help her both A) get more strength and B) learn how to use her body so she's less likely to get injured.

Of course, you have to have the dosh to pay a personal trainer who will help you devise a gym and exercise routine to meet your needs.  And the commitment to follow the regime as instructed.

Most personal trainers have always been doing this, the big new aspect of "functional fitness" is that it tries to closely control how the body is balanced -- literally, so that muscles and ligaments aren't overstrained and people don't fall over.
