Is Poole Harbour A Working Harbour?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Yes, Poole is a working harbour, and it has been so for several centuries now. It is the world's second largest natural harbour after Sydney, Australia. Poole is a borough and has an independent status as a unitary district of England. It is located in the county of Dorset in southwest England.

Poole Harbour is now in a state of decline, as its shallow water does not have adequate depth to take the largest ships. The harbour is an ecological marvel, as it supports saltmarsh and mudflats. The population of waterfowl at the harbour during the winter season is important from an international point of view.

The Brownsea Island Nature Reserve in Poole is the place where Lord Robert Baden-Powell started the Boy Scouts Movement, which has grown into one of the most prominent international organisations.

Sunseeker, a leading manufacturer of luxury yachts, is located at the Poole harbour, which is also the point of departure for ferries, such as Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries, which ply to the Channel Islands and France. Some ships departed for the D-Day landings from the Poole quayside and harbour during World War II.
