The etymology of the word Jihad in Arabic is that it's a derivation of the word "Juhad" which means struggle. Literally the word Jihad means to struggle in order to overcome forces of evil and establish order in a chaotic world. A Muslim's Jihad is not just a struggle with external forces but also with internal forces within an individual, the internal struggle is what's called "Jihad e Akbar". However, people seem to misconstrue it's meanings both by those within the folds of Islam and by those who view it objectively and they deem it synonymous is with "Qital" which is only sanctioned in the event of war and only against an army, civilians have never been allowed to be harmed by an army, sanctity is provided to unarmed civilians, their places of worship, trees and fields as well. The social order is not supposed to be disturbed by victors but to be preserved and no personal freedoms usurped.
