How Do I Plant A Rose?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Roses with bare roots can be planted in October or November; however, if you live in a cold area, it's best to wait until the spring. A well-ventilated and sunny position, with well-drained soil is best.

Before you plant the roses, keep the roots in a bucket of water for 12 to 24 hours.   Prune away any damaged parts of the plant, including the roots.  Mix some compost in the soil where you are going to plant.  Well-rotted matter from your compost heap is great for roses.

Plant the rose so that the bud union is about an inch below the ground.  It's important to protect the roses from frost especially in the first year after they have just been planted. Climbers and standards are especially susceptible to frost damage.  Water the rose close to the ground. Excess moisture on the leaves can make them more susceptible to disease.
