Will I Have To Stay In The Same Cabin With Campers If I Work At A Residential Summer Camp?

Answer Question

In the majority of cases, counsellors will stay in the same cabin with their campers at residential summer camps. As a counsellor, your main responsibility is the safety and welfare of all campers entrusted in your care. This implies a 24 hour responsibility and as such, it does not end when the campers are put to sleep at night.

In most cases, you will have between six and ten campers in each cabin, although this does depend on the individual camp, as well as on the configuration of the cabins. In many cases, you will not be the only staff member in a cabin. As a counsellor, you may have your own junior counsellor, or a C.I.T. (counsellor in training) to assist you.

You will usually sleep on bunk beds with the other campers and as a counsellor, it is your responsibility to ensure that all campers are accounted for before going to sleep at night. Additionally, if campers wake up during the night to go to the washroom, and if there is not one in your cabin, you will often have to wake up and accompany the child.
