Is It Possible For Scientists To Be Disgraced?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Yes, it is very possible. Most of the time, scientists follow strict rules in the way they carry out their research but, sometimes, they break these rules and are found out.

Hwang Woo Suk, a Korean scientist is a case in point. He was charged with fraud and embezzlement in July 2006 and was at the centre of one of the biggest cases of science fraud living memory. A junior scientist made up lab results to please his boss. Then, Hwang himself, who did not know this, ordered his own fabrications to speed up the publication of his papers.

Other junior researchers knew but could not challenge Hwang. Five of Hwang's colleagues were also indicted on related charges.

Seoul National University found during an investigation that Hwang had never cloned embryonic stem cells from patients. The claim had raised hopes of new treatments for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer's.
