The origin of Mother's Day is disputed. It could have come from the concept of 'mothering day' that has been prevalent in the United Kingdom for centuries. It could also have come from the movement that was set in place by Ana Jarvis in 1908 in the United States of America. Jarvis managed to convince her mother's church in West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the anniversary of her mother's death.
The idea seemed to gather steam once Ana Jarvis began an extensive letter writing campaign to prominent members of society. President Woodrow Wilson announced that Mother's Day will be observed on the second Sunday of May each year. In the U.K. it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In Greece Mother Day was celebrated in ancient times as a tribute to the Rhea, the Mother of the gods.
Mother's day has spawned an entire gifting industry that develops specific products and services children use to pamper their mothers.
