What Skills, Knowledge And Experience Do I Need To Study Postgrad Directing?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Most postgraduate level courses require a minimum of a first degree (not to be confused with a first class degree, which many people do) and professional experience in the theatre in some capacity.

You need to be an excellent analyst of plays, you must have read widely about plays, acting, design and of course directing.

Your work in the field of the theatre should certainly include directing at university, and preferably some professional experience.

Attention to detail is a skill that one should have, not like numbers or some such, but the tiny details of a production.

One should be willing to demonstrate how one works with actors as this is obviously a key skill, and answer questions about both directing and acting.

Understanding the history of directing itself is a must (Ted Braun's book The Director and the Stage, is a must read).

This combination of skills, understanding, knowledge, experience and of course a knack for this thing called directing is what is required.
