When Was The Savoy Hospital Built, And Whose Idea Was It?

    Savoy Hospital was built in the early 16th century and it opened first in the year 1512. It was the idea of Henry VII who left instructions in his will for building the hospital. His idea was to build this for poor and needy people. It was built on the site where the palace of Peter of Savoy used to be. This hospital was had a group of permanent medical staff during those days. This hospital was closed and reopened a few times during its existence.

    It was closed in 1553, and its lands were given away by the king. It was restarted in 1556 by Queen Mary. However, none of the masters were sincere about maintaining the hospital and misused the resources for their own benefit. In 1670, during the Dutch was, some of the buildings were taken away from the hospital to home the wounded soldiers.  Although the then king Charles II promised to return these back, it was never done.
    The Hospital finally was dissolved in 1702 by Lord Keeper Wright.
