When Did The Dutch Occupy Angola?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Dutch occupation of Angola began in 1641, but it was short-lived and lasted only for seven years. In 1648, the Dutch were forced to give up their control over Luanda. For that duration of seven years, Luanda's occupation by the Dutch provided a big boost to the confidence of many other African nations that were opposed to the Portuguese rule. Portugal reclaimed its temporarily lost control over Angola from the Dutch in 1648 and started battling more aggressively to reconquer all its lost territories.

By 1650, all the possessions and territories that were lost to the Dutch for seven years were restored by the Portuguese and they started signing treaties in an attempt to appease the kings in the state of Kongo in 1649 and Njinga's kingdom of Matamba and Ndongo in 1656. In 1671, the Portuguese conquered Pungo Andongo, but they were unsuccessful in their attempts to invade Kongo in 1670 and Matamba in 1681.
