Why Is 2y+1/x=4 Not A Linear Equation?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The x term is inverted (raised to the -1 power).  That does not follow the ax + by + c = 0 or y = mx+ b form of a linear equation.

Just look what happens when the value of x is very small and approaches zero.  The value of 1/x gets very large and approaches infinity.
