Which Artists Fall Into The Art Nouveau Era?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Art Nouvea flourished during the early 20th Century, although its first stirrings can be seen towards the end of the previous century. In particular, Arthur Mackmurdo's illustrations seem to presage the movement, which took its name from a Paris shop which showcased works of this style.

Art Nouveau concentrates heavily on violent curves and an exploration of the organic within art and architecture. It can be seen as a direct criticism of the supposedly backward-looking Victorian era. The movement spread across much of Europe, with its epicentre found towards the East, particularly in Prague. It also spread to Russia, and so the list of notable artists associated with the movement is large. It includes architects such as Gaudi, whose cathedral masterpiece is often seen as the perfect summing-up of Art Nouveau, as well as Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Munch, van de Velde, Klimt, Bradley and Mucha.
