What Kind Of Sleeping Bag Do I Need For Backpacking?

Like tents, sleeping bags are rated for weather, by degrees at which you will stay warm. For most trips, a 20-degree F. rating will suffice. Bags come with either down or synthetic fill. Down is a bit heavier, but is warmer. The main disadvantage is it turns into consistency of overcooked spinach when wet.
A tapered, "mummy"-style bag will keep you warmers; like packs, there are now bags designed for women's broader hips, but you'll pay a lot more.
Always fluff up your down bag for maximum warmth by giving it a few good shakes then manually working any lumps out of the baffles. Never store a down bag in its stuff sack as the feathers need to constantly "breathe" for maximum loft.
