When we talk about difference, it may be between people, cultures, and traditions or between societies and countries. Different countries of the world have different environments and the people living in those countries have to cope up with the systems prevailing there. So far your question that what are the basic differences between Western and Eastern societies can be explained in the following manner.

In the Western societies people are well educated, their electronic and printed medias are very strong, their cultures and traditions on which they believe very less lead them to pass a different style of life. They believe less on religion and like to pass the life of practical facts, which they face.

On the other hand in the Eastern societies the standard of education is far behind of the West and people usually lead a life, which is less practical and which is full of customs and traditions. That's why people living in Eastern societies are more conservatives in their thought and practical dealings. I think this justification will satisfy your question.
