What Does Mohawk Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Mohawk refers to a Native American people who were the former inhabitants of North America. It could also be used to refer to an individual belonging to this people. It may be used to describe the Iroquoian language which was spoken by the Mohawk.

The word of Mohawk is of Algonquian origin; it is akin to the Narragansett term Mohowaug, literally, cannibal

Another well known meaning of the term Mohawk is a hairstyle wherein the scalp is shaved completely with the exception of a strip of hair which runs upright right across the crown of a person's head - from the forehead extending to the nape of the persons neck. It was traditionally seen in the Mohawk tribe. This style was made immensely popular by the English football player David Beckham. Even though he has gone on to change his hairstyle a number of times after his Mohawk, it remains quite fashionable even today.
