    Yes, Labrador is a retriever. One of several kinds of retriever, it is the most famous and popular breed of dog in both United Kingdom and United States. Friendly, intelligent, good natured and energetic, they make excellent working dogs as well as companions. They are known to be fast learners and respond well to positive attention and praise. The Labrador is said to have originated from on the islands of Newfoundland and Labrador, a province of Canada. It is believed that the Labrador is a descendant of the St. John's Water Dog. The Earl of Malmesbury named it Labrador to differentiate it from the Newfoundland dog. The Labrador retriever was earlier called the St. John's Dog or the lesser Newfoundland.  According to the American Kennel Club, this breed is the oldest of the modern recognized breeds.
