William Blake married Catherine Boucher in the year 1782 their wedding commenced on the 18th of August at the St. Mary's Church Battersea. His wife proved to be of precious aid to him, helping him out on his famous 'illuminated works'.  Catherine Boucher was illiterate when she married him she could not sign her name; Blake taught her to read and write and also trained her in the art of engraving.

William Blake had suffered the blow of a refusal to marriage from another relationship when he met his future wife. The concern Catherine Boucher showed for his broken heart made him profess his love for her. Catherine could not bear any children and this led to some difficulties. But the couple got over their misfortunes together and remained loyal to the end.
