According to the IBM website, the first ever IBM factory was opened in Endicott in the year 1901. Although the company was not yet named IBM, it chose to move to these premises in Endicott, New York as the company had outgrown its old premises and needed more space. This factory then went on to be the first IBM plant.

The roots of the company International Business Machines (IBM) actually dates back as far as the 1880s. In fact it was only formed through the merging of four different companies. These were the International Time Recording Company, the Tabulating Machine Company, Bundy Manufacturing Company and the Computing Scale Corporation. The merger was down to financier, Charles Flint, who went on to call the company the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation. It later went onto be known as IBM.

Today, commonly nicknamed the ‘Big Blue’ - the company has its main headquarters in Armonk, New York. The current CEO is Samuel Palmisano and the company is well known for both selling and manufacturing computer hardware and software. It is then exported to countries all over the world.  The company also has a number of research laboratories in a number of different countries around the world. It is little wonder that it employs almost 400,000 employees the world over and it has often been described as one of the most successful information technology employers globally.  In fact, employees of IBM have even racked up a number of outstanding achievements including five Nobel Prizes.
