What Is A Noctule Bat?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A Noctule bat is one of the largest species of bat within the UK and they are generally one of the first to come out during the evening. They tend to live up to the grand old age of 12 which is pretty impressive for a bat, and their wingspan can reach between 32-44cm. Colour wise they are a golden brown with short hair which is a little longer on their underside and their ears are fairly short and stout.

Generally the Noctule bat lives in wooded areas and they feed on moths, large flying insects and beetles. You will have to be quick to spot them as they do tend to fly really fast and high above the ground. You will not see the Noctule bat from October right through until April as they hibernate in either trees or bat boxes and unfortunately it is not uncommon for up to 50% of them to freeze to death over the winter.
