Answer Question

Yes they can, but it is usually a sign of stress, deformities or problems with the pups or complications from birth.....

A mother will eat her young for a variety of reasons.  If she feels the babies are unhealthy, if she feels the babies are in danger, if the mother feels that she is not secure or under stress.

Please do not touch the babies for at least 12 to 14 days.  Leave the cage in a quiet, rather dark place where the mother feels secure.  I know you would like to keep looking at the babies, but if you leave the mother and babies alone, you have a better chance of the mother taking good care of her babies and them all surviving.

Yes.  I had 2 females who after a year and a half One of them ate the face off her sister during the night. She was still alive after that incident and then passed away shortly. It was surprising because they always played together so nicely. I was never aware that hamsters would do something so mean. The killer hamster passed away 8 weeks later due to old age.  It was sad.

Yes, our hamster has eaten 6 of her babies over 3 weeks. Yesterday we found one with her arm bitten and falling off...she died. Crazy mother. We had another hamster who birthed 6 and loved them all.
