The first and most important thing when trying to quit smoking is to have the confidence that you can do it. If you are willed and believe in that will, then half the task is done. Don’t try to stop the smoking altogether, rather you should first limit it by keeping in view its negative aspects. You should also start exercising, walking being the initial one. You should also motivate others to do it so that you are more motivated and have a companion. You can also chew gum when you feel like smoking. You can find more here.

I don't believe there is a "best way". Each person is different, we all have slightly different personalities so what works for on may not work as well for another.
I've tried several times in several different ways. The first time was just cold turkey like my gramps did, didn't work for me ;)  next i tried using hard candy as a substitute for smokes. Not bad. I lasted 6 months but it was a struggle the whole time. Next i tried the gum. I quit that pretty quick because i didn't like the tingling feeling i got down my throat from it. The lozenges did the same thing to me. I tried the patch this time. It took me gradually down in nicotine level. As a matter of fact, i didn't use my last level at all. I still have them all. I figure if i have any urges i can always use them later. I've been smoke free for 4 months now and have only had a couple minor urges that were easily fought off.
i never thought of any classes or groups because that isn't my style. I did those when i drank and couldn't stand them. Never wanted to drink more than when i was at meetings ;) lol! My path to sobriety was different. To each their own ;) for quitting smoking you'll have to find your own path as well. I wish you luck my friend ;)

Just reduce the number of ciggerates each time.its like:
If you take 10 cigerrates, reduce it to five each day........when you get used to it after a few months..........reduce it to two each day..........and process continues.......
It takes long.............but it's a sure process,of course if you really want to leave...........
