Digital cameras are of assorted types. A digital camera essentially refers to an electronic device which is ultimately used to capture as well as store photographs electronically, that is, in a digital format. This is opposed to use of photographic film as in conventional cameras. Modern compact digital cameras you will find, are characteristically multifunctional, with some of them capable of not just recording sound and/or video but also photographs.

Basically, a digital image would be just a long sequence of various 1s and 0s which actually represent all those tiny little coloured dots (pixels) which collectively make up your image.  Rather than focusing light right onto a piece of film, digital cameras will focuses the same onto a semiconductor device which essentially records light electronically. Then, a computer in effect, breaks down the electronic information into various digital data.
