Who Sang "It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To"?

Singer Lesley Gore sang "It's My Party and I'll Cry if I want to".  It got to number 9 in June 1963.  Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin also had a hit with the song and got to number 1 in September 1981.

Lesley Gore was born in New Jersey in 1946 and she was just 16 when she had a hit with "It's My Party".  The song only reached number 9 in the UK but was a USA number 1 and is still probably her best known song.

In the UK she only had one other hit – "Maybe I know"  which reached number 20 in September 1964, but her career was much bigger in America with a further 16 hit singles and a total of 11 albums, the most recent of which was released in 2005.  

She was one of the most popular singers in the USA and Canada throughout the 1960s, although her public appearances were limited to weekends as she was also attending the Sarah Lawrence College, a private coeducational liberal arts college in New York.  

Although she enjoyed popularity in USA, it was fairly short lived – her first hit in 1963 and her last major hit coming just 4 years later in 1967.  She performed "California Nights" on the Batman TV series in the episode in which she starred as one of Catwoman's minions.

She continued to be successful as a songwriter including writing songs for the soundtrack to the film "Fame".  The song "Out Here on My Own" performed by Irene Cara won her a an Academy Award nomination.
