Within How Many Months/years Is A Landlord Responsible For Replacing The Carpet In An Apartment?

I live in Minnesota, I've lived here for over 5 years, when I moved in I wanted the carpet replaced, there is no matting underneath at all, every time I vacuum pieces of the carpet come off and clog my vacuum, I can lift up the carpet and see underneath to the other side of the room, I'm going to be moving out and the landlord has informed me they won't be changing it for the new tenants, is this sanitary? I'm worried I will be charged from my deposit, what can I do?

Generally speaking in most States the law is to change the carpet every ten years, although this is not written in stone. In your case register the fact in writing that the carpet is not fit for purpose and ask him to inspect it and offer a solution in writing. This way he can't say you have ruined it.
