What Is Special About A Whale Shark?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The whale shark has the species classification of Rhincodon typus. It is a gentle and slow filter feeding shark. It is the largest living shark and fish species in the world. This shark is the only member of the genus Rhincodon. The genus Rhincodon is a part of the subclass, Elasmobranchii. This shark is distinctively-marked from any other member of this subclass. It is believed that this species originated about 60 million years ago. It was first identified in 1828. The name is derived from the fish's large size. Basically, the name is a result of the fact that it is a shark that is as large as a whale. The largest verifiable specimen was recorded at 12.65 meters in length and 21.5 tons for weight. There have been stories of sharks even bigger than this. However, there are sparse scientific records to confirm the size of these other whale sharks. Whale sharks continue to be a source of continuous scientific study to this day.
