Dates would depend on which World Cup you are referring to. For instance, currently we have the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup which is being battles for in the West Indies. This competition commenced on 13 March while it will end on 28 April 2007.
There are 16 competing nations which are sub-divided into four separate groups of four. Ultimately the top two teams selected from the individual group will fight it out in a "Super 8" configuration which is akin to the earlier format known as "Super 6". Thus, the semi-finalists will have to be decided on. In total this World Cup will hold 51 matches, which is three less than those held at the 2003 World Cup. This comes despite the fact that two additional teams are competing this time.
If referring to the FIFA World Cup, the next one will happen in the year 2010 in South Africa.
