Who Were The Actors In George And Mildred?

George was played by actor Brian Murphy who has also starred in many well known series including The Avengers, Z Cars and Dixon of Dock Green, before Man About The House and its subsequent spin off George and Mildred came along.  

Since the end of George and Mildred, Brian has been part of many stage productions but has been seen on TV in The Bill, Last of the Summer Wine and The Catherine Tate Show amongst others.

Brian's closest friend was his co-star in George and Mildred, Yootha Joyce.  He was at her bedside when she died in 1980 of hepatitis.  

Yootha first became known via the Joan Littlewood Theatre Group and then starred in her first film called Sparrows Can't Sing in 1962.  

One-off sitcoms and supporting parts in films made her a familiar face during the 1960s and 70s, but she became best known for the part of Mildred Roper in Man About The House and then George and Mildred.   

Yootha died in August 1980 shortly before the George and Mildred film was released after a long battle with alcoholism.
