Is The Macrobiotic Diet Realistic?

Answer Question

The term macrobiotics was first used by the German physician Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland in his book Macrobiotics or The Art of Extending Human Life and was later used by the Japanese philosopher George Ohsawa to describe a diet pattern that he had designed based on the principle of Yin and Yang (duality). The principle states that all things have opposing states and is employed in diet to create a pattern that balances one's intake of different foods and has a harmonizing effect on the body.

The diet emphasized on the intake of natural foods cooked by traditional methods rather than processed foods with the bulk of intake comprising of cereals, fruits and vegetables and pulses. The diet also included various Japanese food items that were not available elsewhere in the world nor suitable to be consumed considering the climatic difference.

Ohsawa had stated that food that is grown or available locally is the best one for the human body; he also stressed on the importance of diet being adapted to suit the seasons for best results. So in the sense the macrobiotic diet is not one that is to be rigidly followed but to be designed by the individual according to one's constitution, the foods that are available locally and the climate of the region.
