Fair Lane in Dearborn. Ford is buried in the Ford Cemetery in Detroit. He was driven to the cemetery in a Packard. He suffered an initial stroke in 1938. When he realised that he was too unwell to take care of the day-to-day functioning of his company, he sold his company to his son Edsel. But Edsel died five years later, which brought Ford out of retirement. He was extremely unwell and in his early eighties when he handed over the charge of his company to his grandson Henry Ford II.
He retired at the age of 81 in September 1945. On the night of his death, the local power station was flooded as a result of a flood on the banks of the River Rouge, which had left Ford's house without electricity. He and his wife lit candles and oil lamps to generate electricity before retiring for the night, and just before dawn the next morning, the father of mass production and the creator of the modern era, as Ford is known, died, surrounded by candlelight, in the same place where he was born 83 years earlier.
