Which Poet Wrote Under The Name Of Ellis Bell?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell were the pseudonyms chosen by the three Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne. Ellis? Emily Bronte is better known as the author of "Wuthering Heights", but in the years after the Brontes were first published, Emily's poems were more favourably reviewed than her only novel. In fact critics were shocked by the cruelty and violence of "Wuthering Heights", which nobody guessed could be the work of a woman. One described "Ellis Bell" as "a man of uncommon talens, but dogged, brutal and morose."
The poems of the three sisters were published as a collection in 1846. Emily never wished hers to be published at all (ironically, as she is now the only Bronte sister whose poems are much read.) In fact the book attracted virtually no attention until the whole family later became famous through the success of Charlotte's "Jane Eyre." The poems, in particular Emily's, did receive some praise then. Today Emily's best-known poem is "No Coward Soul is Mine," which has been described as "a strange hymn to the god of life." She died in 1848.
