There are various types of primates in the rainforests of the world. These include gorillas, howler monkeys, lemurs, proboscis monkeys, spider monkeys and white-faced monkeys.
The gorilla lives in the forests of Africa and is the largest of the living primates today. There are three species of gorillas, namely the Western Gorilla (further categorised as the Western Lowland Gorilla and the Cross River Gorilla), the Eastern Gorilla (the Eastern Lowland Gorilla) and the Mountain Gorilla. Howler monkeys are native to the South and Central African rainforest. They are sub-divided into the Coiba Island Howler, the Azuero Howler Monkey, the Mantled Howler, the Guatemalan Black Howler, the Red-handed Howler, the Brown Howler (the Northern Brown Howler and the Southern Brown Howler), The Guyana Red Howler, the Amazon Black Howler, the Bolivian Red Howler, the Venezuelan Red Howler, the Colombia Red Howler, the Juara Red Howler and the Black Howler.
Lemurs are found only on the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar. Lemurs are further sub-classified into tarsiers, dwarf lemur, mouse lemurs, lemurs, sportive lemurs and woolly lemurs. Proboscis monkeys are monkeys that have a long, protruding nose. Spider monkeys are native to southern Mexico, Brazil and other South American countries. They are classified on the basis of their physical appearance, so they are sub-divided into red-faced, white-fronted, brown, white-cheeked, ornate, hooded and black-headed spider monkeys. They are also classified on the basis of their country of origin, so there are Peruvian, Colombian, Geoffroy's Yucatan and Geoffroy's Mexican spider monkeys. The white-faced monkey is also known as the white-faced or white-headed capuchin. It is an animal native to South and Central America.
