In The Merchant Of Venice, What Test Do Portia's Suitors Have To Take?

Answer Question

Portia is wealthy and beautiful. To protect her, her late father has devised a character test for her suitors. Instructions are left in his will that anyone wishing to marry her must choose one of three caskets. The first is made of gold, and has a message on it saying, "Who chooseth me shall have what many men desire." The second, of silver, promises that the taker will "have what he deserves." The third is made of lead, and warns "who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath."
The test proves effective: Portia's bold, greedy suitor chooses gold, and is told "All that glisters is not gold." Her vain, foolish suitor chooses silver and is rewarded with a portrait of "a blinking idiot." Finally Bassanio, who loves her, takes the leaden casket, which of course is the right one; he is rewarded because he can "choose not by the view." He and Portia are married immediately, and his friend Gratiano marries Portia's maid, Nerissa.
